What is the name of the functional group of esters?

You'd call it an ester group

You name it like: [alcohol prefix]-yl [acid prefix]-oate, where:

  • the alcohol prefix is the side of the ester that originated from the alcohol
  • the acid prefix is the side of the ester that originated from the carboxylic acid

For example: ethanol and butanoic acid form an ester called ethyl butanoate
