The hydrogen gas produced in a reaction between Magnesium and Hydrochloric acid was collected in a gas syringe. If it occupied 25.6mL at SLC what mass of hydrogen must have been collected?

Okay so i need to find out the amount of substance for this question.

Which formula do I use for a question like this?

I have enough information to satisfy both methods but each gave me a different answer?

  • Using PV = nRT yields: n = 0.00114 mol (using T = 273, R = 8.31, P = 101.3)
  • Using n = V/Vm yields: n = 0.00114 mol (using Vm = 22.4)

I got the same answer for both. You should be able to use either method. The first method is more accurate though.
