Is it anywhere nearly as common as high school (VCE level) tutoring?

Is there a reason why they are not needed?

At university there are two main styles of classes:

  • lectures (classes of 100+)
  • tutorials (classes of 10 or so)

This might be the reason why private tutors are rarely hired, because there is already a tutorial class offered for each subject.

However, residential colleges at university usually offer supplementary tutoring, which are also in a small class environment, but not as laid out or set out as the university tutorials - which allows students more time to ask the tutor questions.

Note that I am a private tutor for VCE and university however. There is some demand for tutoring in the subjects that lead on to an honours year (because your marks matter!) – Collin Li May 25 at 20:47

In university settings, the subject is divided into lectures and tutorials. Often students will found these set ups to be suffice to help them mastering the concepts taught in the subject. However, for some other students who are really struggling with the concept or who is willing to do exceptionally well often employ a private tutor who has completed this subject earlier on. Note, a private tutor is a person who is there to help you master the concepts and NOT a person who will complete all of your assignments etc. If you have any issues pertaining to tutoring at a University level. Please feel free to contact me personally as I am a current economic tutor as well as private tutor in the University of Melbourne.

Hope this helps
