Hi everybody,

I'm thinking of doing the UMAT and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice?

Thanks.

Great question!

It is recommended to do as many practise ones as possible, e.g. ACER Practise Books in order to get used to the type of questions and most importantly finishing on time. UMAT involves a lot of reading and problem solving as you would know.

Med Entry provides a range of free sample questions with the option of buying more.

Again Med Entry also provides workshops, and preparation, imperative if you want to succeed.

However please note, UMAT is a lot like the GAT- you cannot really practise for it, you either know it or you don't. UMAT's website stresses that they do not endorse commercial courses/questions and so forth.

Also interesting and important to note is that

Intensive preparation is not advisable or necessary. However, as with any test, some practice in answering questions of a similar type, and under similar time constraints as those found in the real test is helpful and reassuring to most candidates. --UMAT

Best of luck to you!

Agree with you there asa hoshi, UMAT isn't something you can improve on in my opinion. Plus, the amount they charge for the courses are ridiculous – Dan Apr 3 at 8:09

The UMAT is very important. In any competitive course like Medicine it will be difficult to get in if you bomb in the UMAT regardless of your ENTER.

There are preparation courses for the UMAT but they are expensive. I think the courses can help in that you are forced to think about the test regularly and get used to answering the style of questions asked in the UMAT. The UMAT format really suits certain students because they are really good at that style of thinking. Many students though will look at the question and think "what do they mean" "what are they asking"

Other resources are your school which surprisingly can be a great source of information particularly the Careers Counsellor (direct you to resources, courses the best ones) and your library, and the Coordinators.

Another resource (and cheaper) is many medicine students offer tutoring specifically for the UMAT because they scored highly and may be worth trying. There is a site called VCE matching or something similar. Start with Google.Hope this helps.

There are many lectures/workshops set up for UMAT preparation but from word of mouth I have found MedEntry to be the most effective.

Heres their website http://www.medentry.edu.au/platinum_detail.asp

They are a tad expensive but I have heard its well worth it. ($790) but it comes down to $570 with a group discount (find two more people to do it with)

If you cant find anyone, try asking around on Merspi or Vcenotes (: Thats what I did

They have workshops all year round so its hard to miss out

Everyone knows that MedEntry takes questions and repackages them and sells them at rip off prices to unsuspecting students.

Here's a quick reference so please beware that they work by conning large numbers of young people into workshops and of course these students get ripped off and DON'T get into their uni course.

MedEntry was totally kicked out of Ireland for this reason. The Irish students are onto "shilling" on websites!

My site is linked here: UMAT talk

Interesting website. Do you have any sources/evidence about MedEntry being a 'rip off'? – James Spittal Apr 3 at 5:19
What does "shilling" mean? – Collin Li Apr 3 at 13:08
