I had a multiple choice question that asked:

Which one of the following gases in most soluble in water?

  1. helium
  2. sulfur dioxide
  3. argon
  4. nitrogen

The answer was sulfur dioxide

Why is this so? Polarity?

Hey vitir, I edited your dot points, to separate them press 'enter' on your keyboard after each bullet point. (haha, don't worry, I still make that mistake) – asa.hoshi Dec 19 at 12:53

Exactly. Polarity is the right answer.

None of those other gases have dipole moments, as they are either noble gases or symmetrical molecules!

On the other hand, sulfur dioxide is a V-shaped molecule (like H2O) and certainly is a dipole. And hence, it interacts with water and is soluble.
