Hello.

I am sure many students in year 10, going into year 11 are confused about the difference between these three English subjects, after all what could be so different about a single language/subject?

However there are clearly differences between these subjects which may be of benefit to many students.

I never did English Language in year eleven or twelve but,

English:

  1. Most students do it in year eleven and twelve
  2. It's a popular pre-requisite degree-wise
  3. Focuses on the narrative; rather than writing style in the prescribed texts
  4. Includes Language Analysis of Persuasive Techniques

Literature:

  1. Often considered more difficult than English
  2. Focuses on the writing style of individual authors and not just the narrative
  3. Often includes poetry in the prescribed texts
  4. Includes content on the cultural and social elements of the prescribed texts. For example, what was the cultural and social environment in which the text was written and what effect did this have on the writing style?

English Language:

  1. Often regarded as the hardest of all three subjects.
  2. Very few students undertake it.

From what I've heard James' answer is correct, except I think Literature is considered the hardest of the three.

My take on English Language: (which I also haven't done)

  1. Studies the structure behind English (grammar, etc.)
  2. Suitable for logical types (I've heard of math/science-leaning people doing well in this!)
  3. But due to small population of students studying this -- the competition is fiercer than VCE English, and hence some schools will discourage this strategic choice (happened to me!)
