Hi,

I understand a significant percentage of year 10's do a Unit 1/2 subject, but I am worried it may be too much pressure for me. However I also would like to have a go, so as to not fall behind and be faced with a lot of pressure in year 11/12.

Any recommendations?

Also, my school does not have a unit 1/2 class for economics, only a 3/4, do you think it's perfectly possible to jump straight into a 3/4?

I did Unit 1/2 Biology in Year 10, and Unit 3/4 in Year 11, so I might be able to give my perspective on it.

There are a couple of advantages to it. For example, I had a headstart to finding out which field of Science suited me best. I enjoyed the subject very much and gave me some idea of what I wanted to do at Uni - Health Sciences. Being able to do Unit 3/4 Biology in Year 11 also gave me an opportunity to choose other subjects in Year 12 (Now that Biology is finished, I can choose Physics). Having done a wide variety of subjects, I have a better understanding of Science as a whole and has definitely given me an advantage at Uni.

Looking back at Year 11, I saw that there were some disadvantages of doing Units 3/4 in Year 11. This may not apply to everyone, but has happened to me. Working in a Year 11 environment, I didn't see the importance of a Year 12 subject - took SACs as normal Year 11 assignments, not knowing that VCAA exams reflected the type of questions in the real exam and what grades/study scores to aim for. I revised for the exam like how I would do for my other Year 11 exams. As a result, I didn't do as well as I have expected if I did the subject in Year 12. With a bit more advice and support from teachers, the problem could have been overcome.

Thanks for that, coming from a person who did do a 1/2 in year 10, and a 3/4 in year 11 you offer an accurate account. I think you made a valid point, it acts as a "wake up call" so that when you DO get up to year 12, you know how to study better and revise. – asa.hoshi Dec 8 at 1:43

Would really depend on what subjects that you want to do.. The school that I teach at quite often allows students to do Unit 1/2 subjects in Year 10. Generally they choose to do subjects like IT (can't think of what it is called now, used to be IPM), HHD, maybe some PE. I have had some students do Biology before in Year 10.

I guess the thing is, maybe talk to your VCE coordinator and say that you are keen, and then have a look at how it fits in with your other subjects..

Good luck.

Thanks for the answer Mr G, as well as listing the commonly done Unit 1/2 subjects done in year 10! That's going to be really useful for a lot of students here :) – Collin Li Nov 8 at 7:23

No worries... Every school can be a bit different... I know that some of the different strands of Maths is another subject that some students choose to do Units 1 & 2 of in Year 10. – Mr G Nov 8 at 9:42
