This question arises because the Data Booklet for the VCE Chemistry exams gives atomic weights of atoms with 1 decimal place and, so, H is given as 1.0 g/mol. Does this mean that if you calculate the molecular weight of a compound containing hydrogen that the answer must be given to 2 significant figures?

Yes, you should. If you're using a figure with 2 significant figures in your calculations, your answer must be in 2 significant figures. But I'm not sure how much VCAA sticks to this. I can hardly imagine them marking it wrong though. They'd have to accept it, IMO. |
