Do we have to know the specific indicator needed for reactions such as

a) strong acid & weak base

b) weak acid & strong base

c) strong acid & strong base

d) weak acid and weak base

If so, would it be correct to say,

a) Phenolpthalein (changes colour in high pH)

b) Methyl orange (changes colour in low pH)

c) Bromothymol Blue (changes colour in neutral pH)

d) Bromothymol Blue (changes colour in neutral pH)

Definitely great guesses there, and you do need to know how to choose an indicator, but only based on some given some pH range around the endpoint (i.e.: on a pH curve).

So I think it's highly unlikely you'd be expected to know it from that information, but say there was a pH curve that showed there was a sharp endpoint with the pH changing from 11 to 6, then you could find an indicator that changes in that range (using your Data Book, which has that information)
