Hey,

So there's about 9 days left until School starts (Year 12) and I'm having second thoughts about Chemistry. Except it's kind of a mixed feeling, I want to do it, but I also kinda don't, you get me? And everyone knows how you should do the subjects you like and are interested in! And I'm just not feeling Chem. O.k so my question is basically, "Should a student change subjects on the basis of having mixed feelings?" I feel like I 'can' do well, but I also feel I wont be really interested in it, and so I won't be motivated to do the work.

You might think, 'why all the blabbing?'. Sorry it's just we can only change subjects in the first week and I'm not really sure what to do, also it's 2:30 AM so I may say pointless things.

Don't be sorry for your question. I'm sure many others have been in the same boat as you. – Collin Li Jan 22 at 16:28

Haha, it's 4:30am now so this may sound even more pointless ;D

Your situaiton is completely normal and understandable. Dont worry, most if not all VCE students go through this dilemma at least once in their course.

In my opinion, You should relaly do subjects that you are interested in but it really depends on what you are going to switch it for.

Will you like the new subject?

Will it be easy to catch up on the year 11 knowledge?

Do you believe you will do well in the new subject?

You've got to add up the pro's and cons.

Personally, If I were in that position and I knew I'd be getting a good score, I wouldn't risk picking up another subject.

Thanks so much, I've been having these moments but then coming back to my senses. hopefully this is the last of them, and yes I think I can get a good score and the only other subject I'd pick up is a humanities subject...and there's nothing I hate more than humanities...Thanks... – Blakhitman Jan 22 at 17:40

Excellent point! There's no point complaining about something if there's no better alternative. Helps you to better appreciate your current situation as well :) – Collin Li Jan 22 at 22:24

He Blakhitman, I will sound like an old record on repeat-but as Collin said, don't feel sorry! This site has been made to answer any question, regardless of how 'silly' they may seem!

Although I can't comment on Chemistry specifically, I know exactly how you feel! What I would suggest for you to do is;

  • Look at past exams, do you see yourself as being able to perform well in it? Usually if you find a subject easy it means you would enjoy it (who wouldn't enjoy getting high marks =D). This is what I did for two of ym subjects which I had second thoughts about.

  • If it will be your 5th or 6th subject, just do it! Even if you currently don't feel 100% about doing it, what have you got to lose? If anything it will help increase your ENTER/ATAR via the increment bonus.

  • Personally I don't believe 100% in the "only pick subjects you enjoy", why? Well because many of the subjects offered at schools I do not enjoy, if that makes sense? The kind of subjects I like are not actual VCE subjects, but rather based on stuff you learn in University, also for the few subjects which actually exist at VCE and which I liked, where never offered at my school. Point is, it is absolutely okay to do a subject if you're feeling iffy.

Why? Well because feeling 'iffy' means you still feel 50% about it, i.e. if you really didn't want to do it, it wouldn't be so hard to say "I will drop it"

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Thanks asa.hoshi. I've decided to go on with Chemistry! And To be completely honest, I feel maybe ~ 60% about it :). – Blakhitman Jan 23 at 10:46
