<p>To 20cm3 of a gaseous hydrocarbon. 80cm3 of oxygen were added.
After explosion and cooling to room temperature, the residual gases occupied 70cm3.
After absorption by KOH, 30cm3 of oxygen remained.
Determine the formula of the hydrocarbon.</p>

<p>During an analysis of a hydrocarbon, a 10.5 g of sample underwent complete combustion to produce 17.5 L of CO2 at SLC. A separate experiment showed the molar mass of the gas to be 44.0 gmol-1. Determine the molecular formula of the hydrocarbon.</p>
<p>I tried to do it, but it's not working out. Please help. Cheers :)</p>

<p>Firstly, does 120 g have 3 or 2 significant figures in chemistry?</p>

<p>After working out a compounds empirical formula, when I found out the that the 'actual' thing is double in terms of molar mass, how do I know that it will go from say: CH2O to C2H4O2 instead of simply 2CH2O which produces the same 'evidence' satisfaction.</p>
