How could I find the range if the domain is given to me or the domain if the range is given to me, by hand? Do I need to sketch and inspect the graph? Or could I just sub in values into the equation etc. Thanks

As a first step, you could sub in the y-values from the range to back out the domain (or vice versa, the x-values from the domain to get the range).

But you need to check it against the actual function (inspect the graph) otherwise you will most likely be wrong unless you have a really simple function like a straight line...
