The monomer 8-hydroxyoctanoic acid has 250 monomers, when it goes through a condensation reaction to form a polymer, why is 249 water molecules lost? Why not 250 water molecules are the product? I thought you can't lose anything in a reaction according to some law

Because 1 water is when the COOH bonds with the OH of the next monomer. However think about the first monomer and the last monomer. They are not forming bonds with one of their COOH or OH groups because they are stuck on the end... Hence you only need 249 bonds to join 250 monomers. It's the 249 bonds that cause the loss of 249 water molecules
