You can say a few different points:

Yes - conflict is pointless and futile; from small to large scale conflicts, there have been many that resulted in pain and suffering but the ultimate goal was never achieved (eg/ Hitler, Khmer Rouge, Stolen Generation, or even two kids bickering with each other)

No - conflict isn't pointless and futile; sometimes a dramatic change can occur post-conflict eg/ Apartheid, American segregation, Kevin Rudd's 'Sorry' speech

Some other points:

Conflict isn't pointless because people often change through new experiences, learning, personal development
Some conflicts can be pointless while others are purposeful
All conflicts are BOTH pointless and purposeful for different people eg/ While one person may have learnt a great deal from a conflict, another person may have seen it as something trivial.

Anyway, I hope that helps you explore some new ideas :)
