The extra information is useful - seeing that most animals are mobile the lighter form of energy storage increase the efficiency. They still need glycogen (ultimately glucose) for high intensity efforts because less oxygen is needed to liberate the energy when compared to lipids. Conversely, plants don't move and can afford to store carbohydrates.
