Why does the size of the specimen have to be small to be viewed under a light microscope?

I know that it has to be small, but I can't explain why.

Help please.

Thanks.

Light needs to pass through the cells in order for them to be viewed.

Because in order for the cell to become visible you need a light source, light can't travel through a solid object
