Hi. I'm in year 10 and im considering doing unit 3/4 biology next year. I haven't done 1/2. Is it necessary to do 1/2 and then 3/4 or will i be able to cope?

I'm also a year 10 student, enrolling to do a 3-4 subject and what I'd do is make sure that you are able to do 3-4 without 1-2 through checking out VCAA's study designs. This is from the VCE Biology study design.

Entry:
There are no prerequisites for entry to Units 1, 2 and 3. Students must undertake Unit 3 prior to undertaking Unit 4. Units 1 to 4 are designed to a standard equivalent to the final two years of secondary education.  So in answer to your question, you can do technically do 3-4 without 1-2.My subject that i'm doing 3-4 of does not have 1-2 available, so I have to do 3-4. As part of my preparation, I've read up on some of the unit 1 and 2 study designs: it's not as good as having a teacher and a classroom, but it's a start.

Yeah go for it mate! You can always pick things up in Biology.

Just make sure you understand some of the underlying concepts such as:

Molecules are always bouncing around randomly in the cellular and non-cellular environment.
Things inside a cell are really tiny but each thing has a really specific shape and function and interacts with other 'things'.
There is always variation in life

Biology is a cool science, hopefully you will love it like I do!

hey!

i did biology 3/4 without doing 1/2 and i have to say it was fine for me. I didn't feel like i was missing all that much, or that i was at any disadvantage because i hadn't studied 1/2 biology. I think you'll be absolutely fine, because 1/2 biology covers different areas from 3/4 biology...the only main overlap i can think of is the structure of cells and organelles, which really isn't too difficult to grasp if you study it well :)

so i'm sure you'll be absolutely fine if you do take biology 3/4 without 1/2.

best of luck

I did 3/4 biology in year 11 without the 1/2 unit. You will be able to cope fine if you have good study habbits. The only time when it seems like you can't do it is the very beginning of the cource because you start freaking out that your not good enough and everyone seems so much smarter than you (turns out it's because they already studied it in unit 1/2. Cell structure and you can learn it so easily) Don't be put off though! After those initial weeks everyone is learning new stuff as well. It's such a great subject and really intresting. You should do it :)
