Hey all. Im still in high school, and I want to get into medicine in the future. I've heard that in Melbourne Uni it takes you 7 years to get an MD (Doctor of Med) and in Monash they have undergrad MBBS which takes 5 years. They both sound like great places to go, but what do you think are the good and bad things about these two universities? Thankyou.

Melbourne Uni all the way! If you think about it, MD is better that MBBS and Melbourne is better that monash, silly question!! But honey, seriously Melb is academic and monash is practical. What would suit you?

No. I go to monash and im having a ball. I think that you should concentrate on getting a good enter so that you will be able to get into either of these two universities. And Sam, I dont think that you can say "melb is academic and monash is practical". Have you ever studied in monash?

For melbourne university MD (Doctor of Medicine) you need to pass a test called the gamsat, it is quiet intensive (you need to write essays, you also need university level knowledge of chemistry biology and year 12 physics to be able to do it) and if you know what the umat is, the gamsat is much longer than that.

Since it is a graduate program, you undertake a 3 year undergraduate degree (science or biomedicine would probably be the only ones to satisfy the prerequisites).

These can be taken at any uni (doesnt have to be melbourne).

I think this way also provides you with more time to decide if you really want medicine or not, you may decide you love science or you may want to change your future career path.

However, there is a catch.

There is no guarantee if getting into melbourne MD (unless you have an extremely high enter ~99.95 and you keep a high GPA during your university studies).

So, you could do a 3 year undegraduate program and not be accepted into melbourne medicine... or you could.

There is an element of risk involved here.

Monash medicine you get in straight away from undergrad and obviously that means you have a place.

Melbourne Uni:
Advantages:
*More Prestigious
*Higher Global Ranking than Monash
*More central location to the city
*More international name
*More time to make up your mind

Disadvantages:
*Not gauranteed entry into medicine (see above) and you may not get in
*Requires you to sit the GAMSAT which is much more difficult and longer than the umat
*You are required to undertake particular prerequisite subjects during your undergrad degree

Monash Uni:
Advantages:
*Less time spent at uni, you're in the job faster and you have two years less of fees to pay back.
*Once you're in, you're in.
*Depending where you live clayton might be futher or closer

Disadvantages:
*More competition to get in because it is the only undergrad program in victoria
*If you get in and decide you dont want to do medicine anymore after a couple of years, you've wasted a couple years

Melbourne MD is not really better than a MBBS. The Melbourne MD isn't really a true MD. Read http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/193_11_061210/rob11006_fm.html. Monash and many other universities offer a MD program which is further post graduate training on top of an undergraduate medical degree. You would be given the title of MD from Melbourne but in terms of training it will be the same as a postgraduate MBBS from any other university.

Medical degrees are the same. The best medical school is the one you get into.

All the best for your applications for medicine. Hope to see you around one day =)
