Has anybody found that we don't really need to know much about dry cells, button cells, etc.

I'm asking this because it's never really come up in past exams, in my experience.

Are there any specific VCAA examples of this?

There was one question on fuel cells in last year's chem exam.
However it's a newish element to the course, so there hasn't been a huge amount of 'time' to test it yet. Considering how new the questions were on the midyear, I'd check out the VCAA specific knowledge requirements (will be on their website) and make sure you know everything in detail.

You don't actually need to know anything in particular, from what I've been told; if they're going to ask you to analyse a dry cell or a fuel cell then they'll give you sufficient information to help you out, like 'acidic environment' or 'alkaline environment' or a diagram.
So I wouldn't worry too much, but, do take a look at common fuel cells and go through the equations, eg, Hydrogen Oxygen fuel cell.  Because that will save you time and it's a common question.  Methanol and ethanol ones as well.

It isn't that hard to tackle these kind of questions. Always treat your data book as a friend. For example, you can read off the anode and cathode reactions for a Hydrogen-Oxygen fuel cell off the electrochemical series.

As mavisgibbons mentioned, you will get the information required such as the overall equation. You will be required to write to write out the oxidation and reduction equations from the overall equation. Look at the oxidation states!

Fuel cells will be assessed, but don't try to memorise equations.
