"When faced with conflict, we can't help but be involved."

Could I get some background info on the war in Vietnam? Thanks.

Background Historical information

It would be easy to give a simplistic answer to the "complex" historical events that follow Vietnam's journey from Colony (Pre-WW2) ==> Japanese occupation ==> Post-Colonial (following 2WW and French defeat during the mid-1950's during the First Indochina War) ==> increasing American intervention during mid-1950's into 1960's ==> Second Indochina War and total American (+ Australian) involvement ==> Independence/Peace by 1975/76.

For the purposes of the novel, the period between 1945 and 1957 in probably more relevant ... Objectivity is required and an understanding of the post-WW2 context and the post-colonial developments throughout the Far East, as well as Vietnam's struggle towards independence and the choice of democracy or communist state, as well as the perceived and actual "Communist" threat during the "Cold War", as well as other complicating factors.

Greene alludes to all these, and is prescient in his observations, if adopting a less than impartial view (depending on your viewpoint!) about American involvement.

Thanks for that! Very helpful.
Do you have any outside examples that I could use if I were to write an expository essay? Thanks in advance
